CAN YOU BELIEVE IT? PASTICHE IS TEN YEARS OLD!

Pastiche, home of “Philanthropy With Phlavor”, Sincerely thanks its customers and the Tucson Community as they celebrate their big ten year anniversary!

After ten years, Pat and Julie Connors, owners of Pastiche, reflect on what the past decade has meant to them. “Pastiche has been a lot more than a ’full-time’ job“, says Julie. “Pastiche is also more than great food, an enjoyable place for our staff to work, and a comfortable and pleasing place for our guests; it’s a way for us to give something back to the Tucson we really love! Although we’ve both lived in several other cities, neither of us ever wants to live anywhere else again.”

Nine years ago, Pat and Julie decided to create a new way to deal with the multitude of donation requests that Pastiche constantly received from a huge variety of sources. They created the unique “Philanthropy With Phlavor”, where Pastiche’s customers decide where to give the restaurant’s charitable donations. Twice a year, every June and October, the guests designate from a list of 40, which nonprofit will receive 5% of their check amount (before sales tax, gratuity or discounts). Via “Philanthropy With Phlavor”, Pastiche has donated over $80,000 in the past ten years. “It’s incredibly satisfying!”, exclaims Pat, who has also been instrumental in the development and funding of several nonprofit groups, such as Tucson Originals, Primavera Cooks!, and the Tucson Culinary Festival.

“Our customers seem to really like and appreciate ’Philanthropy With Phlavor’, and since we really like and appreciate our customers, we want to celebrate our tenth anniversary with more than just balloons and birthday cake, although we’ll have that too”, declares Pat. “We’ll have pictures, and memories, and we’ll be running specials every day our anniversary week (March 31 — April 6) – old menu items that haven’t been available for years and favorites that many of our customers have requested. You can try some old favorites or new ones, reminisce with us about the past ten years, and have a piece of birthday cake for only a buck.”

Come help us celebrate!

PHILANTHROPY

LIST OF TOP 40 NONPROFITS FOR "PHILANTHROPY WITH PHLAVOR"

From the onset of our restaurant, Pastiche Modern Eatery, my wife and I, have had a strong, personal commitment of being involved and helping out as much as possible in our Tucson community. From volunteering at a local homeless shelter, to planning city-wide fundraising events for different groups, to having underprivileged kids tour, dine and learn at Pastiche, to donating food to AIDS outreach patients, to volunteering at our kid’s schools, to donating countless gift certificates, food and staff for charity events, our commitment is genuine and ongoing.

However, not unlike other restaurants, our resources are limited and we cannot say "yes" to everyone requesting a cash or gift certificate donation. Eight years ago we decided that we had to come up with a "plan". As a result, Pastiche Modern Eatery has conducted a unique and very popular charitable contributions campaign in Tucson called "Philanthropy with Phlavor". Through the "Philanthropy with Phlavor" program, Pastiche’s patrons aid us in deciding who receives the majority of Pastiche’s charitable dollars. Twice each year, throughout the months of June and October, our guests not only enjoy an outstanding meal but also have the opportunity to choose their favorite nonprofit organization to receive a donation from Pastiche. We are very pleased that this highly successful program has donated over $70,000 to so many of our community’s worthy nonprofits.

The program is simple: each time a customer dines at Pastiche, orders Take-Out food, makes a purchase at the Pastiche Wine Shop, or buys Pastiche gift certificates during the months of June and October, our staff invites them to choose one of 40 nonprofit organizations to receive 5% of their check amount (before tax, gratuity, or discounts). After organizing and researching the thousands of responses from our guests, Pastiche sends out the checks to our community’s hardworking and extremely valuable nonprofits.

Several years ago we added a new twist to the program. Each group that is due to receive $10.00 or more is given the option of receiving either a check or double their amount in Pastiche gift certificates. Nonprofits frequently choose the gift certificate option to use in fundraising activities, such as live or silent auctions, raffles, door prizes, etc., as well as to reward volunteers and staff. We at Pastiche understand that for many organizations gift certificates constitute a significant part of their fundraising efforts and we are pleased to offer this choice.

"Philanthropy with Phlavor" has really caught on in Tucson and grows more and more popular with both customers and nonprofits each time. The donated amounts doubled in only three years! The nonprofits frequently mention the "Philanthropy with Phlavor" program in their newsletters and they send supporters to Pastiche, especially during June and October, as there is now a friendly rivalry among the nonprofits to try to be in the top ten recipients!

Pastiche employees are proud of "Philanthropy with Phlavor" and encourage all patrons to participate. Our employees have even caught the volunteer bug. After being introduced to a particular charity, several of our employees volunteered for a 5K fund-raiser. They pulled together "Team Pastiche", and those that couldn’t participate physically, participated monetarily. They did this on their own after discovering the charity through "Philanthropy with Phlavor".

Pastiche has been nominated three times for the National Restaurant Association’s "Good Neighbor Award" for philanthropy, and Pastiche has won the Arizona Restaurant Association’s "Good Neighbor Award" several years in a row. In Tucson, we have had inquiries from other restaurants on how to start this program for their establishments. We hope that this kind of program catches on, not only locally, but nationwide. We intend to carry on this unique and fun Pastiche tradition indefinitely!
